allow的多種用法
一、allow作“允許”或“許可”講,常搭用動(dòng)詞不定式短語(yǔ)作賓語(yǔ)補(bǔ)足語(yǔ)即,allow sb.to do sth.允許某人做某事
We were allowed to smoke in this room only.
我們只許在這間屋子里抽煙.
Please allow me to carry your bag.
請(qǐng)讓我替你拿包.
My boss doesn't allow me to use the telephone.
我的老板不允許我用電話.
二、allow 作“許可”,“允許”講,只可搭配動(dòng)名詞短語(yǔ)作賓語(yǔ),不可直接搭用動(dòng)詞不定式作賓補(bǔ),即只可說(shuō) allow doing sth.,不可說(shuō)allow to do sth.
Smoking is not allowed here.
此處禁止吸煙.
They allowed smoking in this room only.
他們只允許在這間屋子里抽煙.
三、allow還常與 out,in,up等副詞搭配使用,即 allow sb.in/out/up等.
She won't allow the children in until they've wiped their shoes.
直到孩子們把鞋擦干凈,她才讓他們進(jìn)來(lái).
She is not allowed out after dark.
天黑后,不準(zhǔn)她出去.
The patient was allowed up after ten days.
十天后病人才被允許起床(下地).
